The Haze Is Outside. So Why Is There Dust on Your Sofa?
You did everything right. You kept the windows tightly shut, left the air purifier running on high, and checked the PSI more times than your group chats. Yet, somehow, there’s still a thin, grey film coating your window ledge.
Welcome back, haze. It's been a while.
A little context, before the cleaning
When Singapore's PSI recently crossed into the Unhealthy range for the first time since late 2023, it was a familiar wake-up call. While we aren't dealing with the apocalyptic 401 levels of 2013, even at moderate levels, the haze is busy redecorating your home in a shade called "Sumatra Grey." The culprit is PM2.5: particles 2.5 micrometres across or smaller. A strand of your hair is roughly 30 times wider. That's small enough to slip through window gaps, ride home on your clothes, and settle on everything you own. So haze isn't only an air problem. It's a housekeeping problem too.
Where haze dust hides at home
Window tracks and grilles. First stop for everything that gets in, whether you're in an HDB flat or a high-floor condo. If you can run a finger along the track and it comes back grey, that's the haze's front door.
Ledges and sills. The dust settles flat and quiet. It's easy to miss until the light hits it.
Fan blades. A ceiling fan moves the air, and everything in it, all day long. Look up. Then maybe don't.
Curtains. Fabric holds onto smoky smells long after the PSI drops. If your living room smells faintly of a barbecue nobody invited you to, it's the curtains.
Sofa and cushions. Same story as the curtains, just more surface and more sitting.
The floor by the balcony door. Where the haze meets your slippers, and your slippers carry it everywhere else.
Cleaning during the haze: the house rules
Wipe. Don't dust. A feather duster doesn't remove fine dust. It relocates it, straight into the air you're trying to protect. Use a damp microfibre cloth and rinse it often. Satisfying, and it actually works.
Keep the windows shut. "Airing the place out" is a great habit eleven months a year. This isn't one of those months.
Check your vacuum. A basic vacuum can catch fine particles and push some of them right back out of the exhaust. One with a HEPA filter keeps more of what it picks up.
Go easy on the strong stuff. With the windows closed, whatever you spray has nowhere to go. It stays in the room with you, the kids, and the cat who already has opinions about everything. If you can, pick gentler, low-fume products this month. Your nose will thank you.
After the haze: the reset
The haze eventually leaves. Unfortunately, the dust doesn't pack up and go with it. Once the PSI is back to Good and the windows can open again, it's time to reset!
Throw the curtains in the wash (check the label first, some are dry-clean only). Vacuum the sofa slowly, seams and all. Wipe the fan blades with a damp cloth, and make sure the dust don’t fall on you. Then mop, starting from the balcony door and working inward.
